There are four general types of vegetation in the kingdom, Fynbos, Karoo Steppe, Forest thicket (Tarzan country) and Renosterveld.
Fynbos (Afrikaans for fine bush) the most well known, where plants such as proteas, restios, heathers and other fine leafed plant types hold sway over the landscape.
Karoo steppe is the driest vegetation type and has large numbers of succulent and daisy species.
Forest thicket and evergreen woodland make up a relatively small proportion of the total.
Renosterveld (Rhinocerous bush) is made up of dense shrub land. When there’s been a fire or clearance, a rich herbaceous under-storey of flowers and bulbs light up the landscape. Renostersveld tends to be on richer fine-grained soils making it ideal for wine, fruit or agricultural production. As a result very few pockets of original Renosterveld vegetation exist.
