About Our Site

Thank you for visiting www.fairplayseed.co.uk

We hope that by now you have had the chance to look through the site and like what you see.  It has been designed with ease of use in mind, and a great deal of effort has gone into making it clear to read and easy to navigate.   Hopefully you will find it as easy to order from this site as it is to marvel at the wonderful plants we have to offer.  However, if you do run into problems, this page may well be of use to you.

The technology

Our site has been written using four languages; XHTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript.  These may not mean much to most people, but we would like to point out one or two things, which don't worry, we will explain!

XHTML is the latest version of the most common language used to create Web pages.  Most of the site relies on this for it's structure, and great effort has gone into making each page comply with the international standards laid down by the W3 Consortium.

CSS is a newer technology designed to improve the usability of Web sites on different platforms (PCs, Macs, PDAs, mobile phones etc) by splitting the code that styles things like text and pages generally from the actual content.  This Web site is a prime example of how CSS was designed to be used, resulting in leaner code, quicker loading times, and pages which are very accessible.  However, if you are using an old browser (Internet Explorer 5 for example) you may find some of the site does not look quite right.  This is because many old browsers do not support CSS as well as the most recent versions.  If you are using an old browser, you really would benefit from upgrading, not just on this site, but almost any you look at.  You can get the most recent version of most browsers for free.  Here are some links:

Internet Explorer 7     Mozilla Firefox 2     Netscape Navigator 8.1.2    Opera 9.10

PHP is the language used to power the dynamic parts of our site - things like the shopping cart and ordering process.  Most older browsers support this nicely.

Javascript is also used in certain parts of the shopping cart and ordering process.  Some people disable javascript in their browsers, but you will find that, like most other e-commerce sites, you will not be able to make orders on ours with it turned off.

Security

We at FairPlay Seed take security very seriously.  All credit and debit card transactions are processed by PayPal, one of the Internet’s largest secure online payment providers.  Even though payments aren't dealt with on our Web site, and we never even see your card details, we have still made parts of this Web site secure.  Once you click the 'Order Seeds' button in your shopping cart, you enter a special area of our site where you can enter your personal details securely and in confidence.  You will notice a padlock icon appear in the bottom right of your screen, and the beginning of the URL (web page address) will change from 'http://www.fairplayseed...' to 'https://sslrelay.com/fairplayseed...' The extra 's' after 'http' stands for 'secure'.  These are two signs that you are on pages encrypted by another technology called SSL.  Put simply, it encrypts the data you send when you click 'Continue', so there's no chance of anyone intercepting anything.

If you are interested in security, you may like to take a look at our privacy and security policies.

Cookies

There are two kinds of cookies our Webmaster likes talking about.  Sadly, the less fun type are the ones he has to write about here.  In terms of Web sites, cookies are small text files that some sites actually place on your computer when you visit them.  Some Web sites are notorious for using this technology to collect personal data from internet users or even 'spy' on their browsing habits.  We're pleased to say the cookies this site uses are much more friendly.

For our shopping system to actually work, our cart pages need to place one or two small cookies on your hard drive.  The only information they contain is a code which is used to identify your computer during your shopping process.  It's a bit like giving your computer a name badge.  Once you have finished ordering and close your browser, these cookies are automatically deleted.  We don't leave any 'crumbs' on your computer to track future visits or collect any data from you.

If you've tried adding packs of our seeds to your shopping cart but it stays empty, the most likely cause is your browser's security settings.  If, for example, you use Internet Explorer with security set to 'high', our cookies, although harmless, will be blocked. There are two ways to get round this: either move your security down a notch to 'medium-high' or manually allow cookies from our site.
